How to Play Cornhole – American Cornhole League (ACL) Rules & Beginner Guide

Over the last five years, cornhole has become one of the fastest-growing sports in America. With more than 200,000 registered players in the American Cornhole League (ACL)—from elite professionals to casual backyard warriors—it’s clear this once-humble lawn game has earned its spot on the national stage.

Rooted in backyard traditions and now backed by ESPN broadcasts and pro tournaments, cornhole is simple, strategic, and fun for all ages. Whether you're brand new or brushing up, this guide covers everything you need to know to play cornhole like a pro.

What Is Cornhole?

Cornhole is a game where players take turns throwing bags at a raised board with a hole at the far end, aiming to land bags on the board or in the hole. Boards are placed 27 feet apart, and games can be played in singles (1v1) or doubles (2v2). The goal? Be the first to score exactly 21 points using accuracy, strategy, and consistency.

While backyard rules vary, official ACL rules bring structure and intensity—ideal for players looking to level up.

Cornhole Boards: Setup & Specs

Official ACL boards are built from high-quality wood and measure:

  • 4 feet long × 2 feet wide
  • A 6-inch hole centered 9 inches from the top
  • Sloped from front to back for smooth play
  • Placed 27 feet apart (front edge to front edge)

Pro boards often feature a proprietary surface finish to enhance control and slide—ideal for competitive and home setups alike.

Cornhole Bags: Materials, Sizes & Styles

Originally filled with corn kernels, modern cornhole bags are filled with all-weather resin pellets. ACL-regulation bags must meet these specs:

  • Size: 6" × 6"
  • Weight: 16 oz
  • Thickness: Approx. 1.3 inches

There are two main types:

  • Single-fabric bags – Same speed on both sides, ideal for casual play
  • Dual-sided bags – One sticky side for blocks/rolls, one slick side for slides/pushes

At 76Brave, our premium bags—like The Grizzly and The Hazzard—are dual-sided and designed to meet ACL & ACA standards for serious gameplay.

Scoring: How Does It Work?

Cornhole uses cancellation scoring—only the net difference in points per round is added to the total.

Scoring Breakdown:

  • 1 point = Bag on the board
  • 3 points = Bag in the hole
  • 0 points = Bag off the board

Example:

  • Player A: 2 bags on + 1 in = 5 points
  • Player B: 3 bags in + 1 on = 10 points
  • Net score: Player B scores 5 points (10 – 5)

First to reach exactly 21 points wins. In backyard games, some use the “bust rule” (reset to 15 if you go over), but this is not part of ACL play.

Grip Technique: Mastering the Flat Bag

To play like a pro, you need to throw a flat bag—one that spins horizontally like a frisbee.

Flat Bag Tips:

  • Grip closer to the front for better rotation
  • Keep your wrist straight and the bag level
  • Release with a smooth flick and follow through upward
  • A flat throw gives you full control over how the bag lands—whether you want it to slide, stop, or push.

Stance: Step or Stand Still?

Your stance affects power, rhythm, and consistency. Two common styles:

  • Step Throwers: Use a forward step for rhythm and momentum. More powerful but more room for error.
  • Stand-Still Throwers: Focus on balance and precision. Most ACL pros—including Matt Guy—stand still for maximum control.

Test both to see what feels natural. Adjust foot placement and throwing lane to refine your form.

The 5 Core Cornhole Shots

Once your grip and stance are locked in, it’s time to master the five foundational throws:

1. Slide Shot

Lands on the board and slides smoothly into the hole. A must-have for any player.

2. Blocker

A high-arc toss that stops on the board to prevent opponents from sliding in.

3. Push Shot

Thrown with more power and the slick side down to push bags into the hole—yours or your opponent’s.

4. Airmail

A direct, high-arc shot that lands straight in the hole, skipping the board. High-risk, high-reward.

5. Roll Shot

An advanced shot that bounces over a blocker and flips into the hole. Mastery required—but game-changing.

When you've nailed these, dive into elite-level shots like the rodeo, bar of soap, and AND1—used by top-tier ACL players to dominate the boards.

Final Thoughts

Cornhole is more than a backyard pastime—it’s a precision sport built on skill, strategy, and execution. From understanding board setup and scoring to mastering the flat bag and pro-level shots, you've now got the foundation to compete at any level.
