The Power and Presence of the North American Grizzly

Grizzly bears, scientifically known as Ursus arctos horribilis, are one of North America’s most powerful and iconic apex predators. Weighing up to 600 pounds, these creatures command respect not just for their size, but for their intelligence, adaptability, and primal presence in America’s last wild places.

Nowhere is that more true than in Yellowstone National Park. Stretching across Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho, Yellowstone is home to one of the largest remaining grizzly populations in the lower 48 states. Here, grizzlies roam free in the sprawling wilderness of Paradise Valley and the Absaroka Mountains—territories unclaimed by time.

And within this rugged domain, one grizzly ruled them all: Scarface.

Scarface the Yellowstone Grizzly – Apex Predator No. 211, Legend of Paradise Valley

The Rise and Legacy of Scarface

Born in the late 1990s and tracked by researchers for more than 20 years, Scarface was one of the most recognized and photographed bears in Yellowstone history. Named for a scar carved by battles with other dominant males—he was the embodiment of power and perseverance.

Scarface’s home range stretched from the Lamar Valley to Paradise Valley, covering rugged terrain few dared to cross. He weighed over 600 pounds in his prime and had survived numerous injuries, mating battles, and encounters with other dominant males.

Tourists and wildlife photographers came from all over the world hoping to catch a glimpse of him. He was featured in documentaries, park reports, and conservation campaigns.

In late 2015, Scarface was illegally shot and killed just outside Yellowstone’s boundary—despite decades of protected status. His death made national headlines and ignited renewed debate over wildlife protections in gateway regions. His loss marked the end of an era. But the legend lives on.

Scarface ruled the wild for decades—now it’s your turn to rule the boards.

The Bear in American Lore

The grizzly is more than a predator. It’s a symbol—etched into flags, carved into folklore, and burned into the American psyche.

  • In 1805, Lewis and Clark documented multiple encounters with grizzlies while charting the American West. The bears charged through gunfire and emerged through brush like phantoms. The explorers had never seen such fearless creatures.
  • In California, the grizzly once roamed from the Sierra Nevada's to the Pacific Coast. Though now extinct in that state, it remains the official state animal, immortalized on the California Republic flag.
  • Throughout Indigenous cultures, grizzlies represent strength, healing, protection, and wisdom. The bear isn’t feared—it’s revered.

This mythology—rooted in real, raw encounters—is what inspires the Grizzly Pro Power and Control bag.
